living well with pain and illness

At the end of every course we ask course participants to complete an evaluation form, which helps us to monitor the efficacy of each element of the course – mindfulness, meditation, pacing etc. Here are a few comments from a past course that we ran.

“A wonderful experience. I really appreciate the honesty and dignity and acceptance with which Hilary and Isobel have facilitated the course. I have felt thoroughly held and supported throughout. Many many thanks”.

“Really meaningful course with great people! Would recommend it to others.”

“Isobel and Hilary are such lovely people and wonderful ‘trainers’. Equally, Juliette and Lucy have been ‘amazing’ helpers. Sharing experiences with others in the group has been invaluable and massively supportive. I am very grateful and feel very fortunate indeed to have participated in this course.”

“Thank you, especially to Isobel and Hilary for their guidance, and Lucy and Juliette for their conscientious support.”

“Loved the course! Thanks!”

“It’s meant a lot that people who can speak from experience of pain and illness have taught this course.”

In our evaluation form, we ask course participants to rate on a scale of 1-10 how important the course has been for them. On the last course that we ran (Sept-Nov 2011) everyone who completed the form rated it 10.

We also ask if they feel they received something of lasting value from the course, with three possible answers: yes, no or not sure. Everyone wrote yes.

We then ask them to write a few words describing that they got from the course. Here are a few of their answers from the last course that we ran (Sept-Nov 2011):

“Benefitted me on so many levels. Enriched my life. Have been introduced to strategies which are most definitely improving the quality of my life / the way I deal with my pain / illness. Has become the cornerstone which will inform / I can integrate into all other aspects of my life.”

“Now find myself in a completely different place when responding to situations / illness / people. A changed outlook / attitude with which to go forward.”

“I feel stronger and more grounded about my ability to cope with my condition. I am more joyful about my life and where my journey is taking me”.

“Acceptance. Nurturing space. Gentle, loving support. Practical exercises. Clear workbook. Useful CDs. Unique approach to pain and illness.”

“Solidarity. Insight in teachings and contributions of the group. Relaxation and peace on Wednesday afternoons! Much enjoyed group discussion. Useful CDs and handouts. Thank you lovely teachers! Enjoyed the poems a lot.”

mindfulness for stress

The following is from a card that a participant gave us at the end of the last course (June-July 2013):

“Just a note to say thanks for all your help. The course has been very informative and well organised, and you never seem to tire of offering us all support! It’s been a great start to gradual and prolonged changes that ultimately, only we can make for ourselves.”

At the end of every course we ask course participants to complete an evaluation form, which helps us to monitor the efficacy of each element of the course.

Here are a few comments from the last course that we ran (June – July 2013). We can’t give names to the quotes because the evaluation form is anonymous, to encourage people to be honest. All evaluation forms are kept in our office.

“I have found it so beneficial. It’s been taught in a thoughtful, well-paced way. Gary is an attentive facilitator and I have welcomed the opportunity to practice and then come back to a group to discuss and learn more. I’m sorry this is the final day [of the course] but want to say thank you for introducing me to mindfulness. I hope to make this an integral part of being me.”

“I think it was very well designed – balance of theory and practice, an extremely insightful and caring teacher who has been very inspiring, plenty of help and guidance. The emails [in between the classes] have also been very useful … Overall a great course! Thanks.”

“Excellent Course overall, very worthwhile – it can change your life (for the better) with practice!”

“Very enlightening course. Simple to understand and adopt. Homework very manageable and no feelings of guilt if not managed to do it”.

“Gary’s emails [in between the classes] were very helpful and encouraging!”

In the evaluation form we ask course participants to rate on a scale of 1-10 how important the course has been for them. On the last course that we ran (June-July 2013) six scored 10, one scored 9 and one scored 8 (one person forgot to score!).

We also ask if they feel they received something of lasting value from the course, with three possible answers: yes, no or not sure. Everyone wrote yes.

We then ask them to write a few words describing that they got from the course. Here are a few of their answers from the last course that we ran (June-July 2013):

“I have really enjoyed the balance of theory with practice, which has motivated me to keep practising.  I now feel more grounded and centred, particularly due to the Body Scans.”

“A sense of real optimism that I can learn to cope better with stress and with daily adversity. A real valuable insight in to how meditation can help me.”

“A daily meditation practice which I struggled to introduce on my own.  The Body Scan has helped me feel more at home in my body and in the moment. I can see how the benefits will continue to grow. I can feel a warmth and an opening up.”

“I now have a grasp of what mind training is about. I am no longer at the mercy of my mind. I can experience life from a different perspective.”

“A framework to help develop a way of ‘being’ rather than ‘doing’. Exercises to help me deal with stress and a re-engagement with what is around me – helping me to experience and appreciate and not react …”

“A sense of there being a way to be in the world that brings me well being and enhances my ability to cope with whatever comes my way. New understanding of what’s important to me.”

And from an email just received (July 25th):

“Finally though, thanks again. I am finally, after 10 long years, realising that my thoughts are just thoughts, and that I do have  a choice. I don’t always exercise it, but it’s always an option!”
